As we mentioned a couple of weeks ago, over the last year or two Dean and I have installed and tested several smart home products in our home. Initially it was Wi-Fi controlled light bulbs for lamps. Then it was outdoor Christmas lights and indoor dimmer light switches. We'll soon be sharing about a smart home thermostat too. But one of the smart home products we were most excited to try was the NuTone KNOCK Smart Video Doorbell Camera. We installed it – which we shared here – and over the last few weeks, we've been using the NuTone KNOCK and LOVING IT!
Just to recap…
WHAT IS THE NUTONE KNOCK?
The NuTone KNOCK is a smart video doorbell camera that can be connected to existing doorbell wiring. It allows you to see the entire entry area with the 180 degrees, 720p, night vision-included, built-in camera. It can sense motion, heat and is totally weatherproof. It will take a video or snapshot when the doorbell button is pressed and you can opt-in (for a mere $30 per YEAR) to have video recorded to the cloud – which is AWESOME for security!
WHY DID WE WANT A SMART VIDEO DOORBELL CAMERA?
Honestly, we wanted a smart video doorbell camera for a couple of reasons. The first being security. With automatic cloud storage of videos (with opt-in service) there's some piece of mind knowing that if someone tries to break in via the front door, we'll get them on video. The second reason is also security. But more from the perspective that no one must go to the door to see who's there when they're home alone or not feeling well. We can just check the Live View in the app.
OUR EXPERIENCE USING THE NUTONE KNOCK
Over the last few weeks, we've had the chance to use the KNOCK as part of our day to day life. And we rather like it! It's amazing to me how quickly I became used to checking on the KNOCK app who was at the door or what moved on our front porch!
I'm enjoying the peace of mind that the KNOCK gives me, knowing that I can see who's at the door without anyone seeing me through the glass in the front doors.
Plus, the convenience of knowing who's at the door is handy too…one of us can go grab the paper girl her money while another answers the door, I can be sure to bring my wallet if it's the pizza guy, or a pen if it's a delivery man. I could also check who's at the door while the kids were home alone to let them know whether they should answer it or not. And I can go back into the app to see what I missed if I couldn't get to the door.
We were temporarily without the KNOCK for a few days while we sorted out an internet provider/router issue…and I MISSED it! I couldn't wait to get it working again. On that note…
TIPS FOR ADDING SMART HOME DEVICES TO AN OLDER HOME
If you install the KNOCK and it's not working or connecting, for sure call NuTone customer support. They're friendly and easy to work with while troubleshooting any issues you may have. And as a side note, if you're adding Smart Home items to your house, but you haven't upgraded your router for a while, you may find – like we did – that it wasn't strong enough to handle the number of devices we wanted to ‘run on it'. Check around though before you go out and splurge on a new router or mesh Wi-Fi system…you may be able to get an upgraded router from your internet provider as part of your monthly package.
WOULD WE RECOMMEND THE NUTONE KNOCK?
At this point, after using the KNOCK for a few weeks, yes, we would recommend it.
The KNOCK can make you feel more secure about your home and receiving packages, like it has for me. It also has other positive uses, like knowing when kids get home or relatives or friends have arrived.
DO YOU HAVE A SMART HOME VIDEO DOORBELL YET? MIGHT IT BE USEFUL AT YOUR HOUSE?
