When we built our mantel last year, I knew I'd have fun decorating it each season. And have I ever! I will admit though that it's taken a bit of practice to figure out – you know, the balance and the elements to make it all work. I never have a complete picture of the finished look in my head when I start. It was no different for this year's Spring mantel – just a bit of an idea and then a LOT of playing.
I don't know if you remember the book page art we had up before, but I thought it was time for a change. You know with it being spring and all. We had some scrap wood kicking around out in the shed. Dean put it all together (screws and nails), I stained it with Minwax dark walnut stain and then Dean added some cheap black gate hinges. That provided the backdrop for the rest of the accessories.
I picked up the birdcage at Homesense (Canadian version of Homegoods) a couple of weeks ago. And I just bought the bird yesterday at The Yellow House – sort of a birthday present for myself. The berry wreath was a Superstore find and cost about $14 or so. I already had the various balls in natural materials which fill the birdcage and the books & candles too.
The candlesticks are Debbie Travis from Canadian Tire. I bought them a few years back and painted them white (they were originally black). I rubbed some Walnut Distressing Ink on them to tone down some of the stark white. We picked up the flowers last night. They are mums that look like daisies. I really wanted tulips – but every store we visited only had bright pinks or purples, which was not quite the look I was going for!
I had some dollar store moss in my craft drawer and the little nests with eggs were actually on sprigs of faux berries from Dollarama.
