Learn how to love your home in this 30 day series about making small improvements to,
being grateful for and seeing the beauty in the home you have.
Welcome back to day 11 of our HOME SWEET HOME – 30 Days to Love Your Home series!
Do you ever feel like your home is a complete disaster and completely out of control? Like there are messes upon messes?
You're not the only one, I promise.
Days are crazy and our homes can get even crazier. Taming the chaos and getting your home under control is a hard task that can occasionally feel overwhelming.
The key to getting your house under control is to remember it did not get this way overnight so you can't fix it overnight.
When you put your head down and tackle the mess and have finished a whole day of decluttering and organizing…there will still be plenty left to do. Don't let that get you down though, or you're likely to give up too quickly.
Start out slowly and work your way through the house over time.
How to Get Your House Under Control
1. Start by getting the clutter out the door
Grab three bags, boxes, or baskets. Label one each: toss, recycle, donate. Make it a goal to add to each of these containers daily. This small step will help get your home under control quickly while you get to avoid the stress that makes it hard to stick to your goals.
2. Fix the areas that catch everything
In most homes, this includes table tops, counters, and pretty much any flat surface you can find. Stop this drop-and-go behavior by placing things like plants or pretty objets around to prevent people from using the area as a dumping ground. Add baskets to contain any necessary items and papers that would otherwise tend to make a mess.
3. Do a little bit each day
Pick a chore that needs to get done or an area that needs tackling and set an alarm. Work on that chore or space only, until the alarm goes off. Setting short time goals for working on decluttering and cleaning allows you to feel less overwhelmed. 15 or 20 minutes of cleaning and organization is totally doable and it's amazing how much you can accomplish in a short, but focused time period.
At the very least, start with step 1 and get rid of the clutter by setting up the three bags, boxes or baskets labeled toss, recycle and donate.
Then this week, work through the rest of the items.
