Hello, Beautiful. Welcome to AKA Design!
I'm Shannon and I'm so happy that you're here.
About The Blog
In 2010 my husband, Dean, and I were renovating a tiny 70 year old war-era bungalow that our family had bought after moving back to the city the year before. While gathering ideas for the renos, I stumbled upon a few DIY and design blogs. Given that our little bungalow had us in almost-constant project mode and that I was also looking for a new business I could do from home while continuing to homeschool our three kids, starting a DIY and design blog seemed like the perfect fit …and AKA Design was born.
The DIY projects and makeovers on AKA Design is the result of team work that has come from 7+ years of Dean and I both figuring out how we work best with each other. I typically come up with the ideas and general design, Dean builds them and then I do the finishing work (like painting and styling).
Of course we have to live life, manage our money and eat too! Thus the food, blogging, money, homekeeping and life posts that have pretty much come from just living life, running a business, homeschooling and feeding a family of five for umpteen years. It's so much more fun when you and I can share it all together!
Dean has always worked with his hands. He is a perfectionist. He sometimes expects wood and other materials in projects to be as precise as sheet metal (which is his day job). Bless his heart. It makes him really good at what he does though. He's been known to make a success out of more than one of my ‘no, I meant let’s do it right now’ ideas. Despite how busy our life is, he loves working on our house projects. He is an incredible husband and superman Dad. He builds all the things and uses all the power tools around here. Partly because I'm terrified of power tools, but mostly because he's way better at building and measurements than I am. Dean also has a day job (at the same company he's worked at for 25+ years) that he goes to for 40+ hours a week, plus a commute into the city from the suburbs. He kinds rocks my world!
I have always loved designing and decorating. Always. I remember helping my mom put up wallpaper and rearrange the furniture while my dad was at work. But that doesn't mean I always knew how to decorate. Quite the opposite actually. I remember how I felt in our first house. I was ecstatic. After all our newlywed and college apartments, we finally had a house. But I was stumped. I had no idea where to start decorating. For real. NO IDEA! I decided to study photos of homes that I loved. I visited model homes, scoured design and decorating magazines and poured over catalogs. Until, I finally – finally – figured out how to put everything together to make our whole house cozy and beautiful, step-by-step, one room at a time. A few years ago I finally completed an interior design program and became an Interior Designer too, but that was just the icing on the cake of what I'd already learned on my own. So I decorate all the things, cook the bulk of the meals in our house, run the blog, homeschool the kids and mostly manage the budget.
Together we have three awesome homeschooled teenagers that we adore. We love movies, our church (C4), food, wine, coffee and family. Home is incredibly important to us.
About Our Home(s)
We've lived in about eleven homes in twenty plus years of marriage. Many were rentals in apartments, condos or apartments in houses. We've also owned 4 houses (not all at once!) since starting AKA Design.
The style you see now in our house tours, is not what it always was. Over time our style has grown and developed (as style tends to do). You can find all of our house tours here.
Enough about us.
