Here are some ideas to take a break and switch things up to help make your everyday routine a bit more exciting and fun. Plus they'll help you feel the joy again when you hit the books in the New Year.
1. Mental Health Day
The beauty of homeschooling is making your own schedule. If you are all struggling, then take a mental health day. Get outdoors or relax and stay in your pajamas watching movies for the day. Do whatever makes you happy and can give you a break to let everyone rejuvenate for another school day.
2. Christmas Curriculum
Switch things up and do some studying about the meaning and history of Christmas. Maybe learn about other cultures and how they celebrate Christmas, learn about the candy cane, etc. Make fun treats to go along with the study so that it feels like it is something new and fun.
3. Hit the Kitchen
Take learning into the kitchen for the day. Bake some holiday treats or a fun dinner for the family. You can use this as a learning experience so that your child can read and follow directions, learn about measuring out ingredients and more. Cooking, especially baking is science after all!
4. Field Trip
Pencil in a field trip for the week. Head out to a local museum to learn about history in your area, or dinosaurs, or whatever you have near you. Taking a break from your regular schedule can really help boost morale for the kids – and for mom.
5. Homeschool With More Kids
If you know some kids in your area who homeschool as well, team up and have a homeschool day. This is a fun way for kids and parents to get to interact with some other people. Have them come to your home or you go to their's for a day of school. It really changes things up and you will be amazed to walk away feeling like it was a productive and fun day.
6. Holiday Crafts
Sit down with the kids and do some holiday crafts. You can find so many different ideas on Pinterest if you need some help. You can even find ways to use play dough as a way to teach about reading, science and more. You can turn pretty much anything into a lesson.
7. Don't Feel Guilty
Don't be hard on yourself, you work hard all year long, it is okay to take a break. Breaks are known to help give you the strength to keep going for the rest of the year. Many homeschool parents express how they feel guilty but then after the day or two they took off they noticed the kids seemed more focused, you personally feel more relaxed and it was a blessing to take it off.
