If you are a blogger or social media influencer, your readers come to your blog and social accounts to read what you write.
Well, sometimes they come for the pictures.
But you know what I mean.
If you want to work with brands as part of your online influencer business, chances are you’ll be asked to write sponsored posts on your blog or share sponsored info on your social media accounts.
When you’re first beginning these partnerships, it can be really tricky to remain authentic and keep your voice in your sponsored content.
(I’m pretty sure some of my first sponsored posts were pretty horrible!)
Here are a few tips to help you keep YOUR unique voice while writing sponsored content.
You know, so you can make money and make your readers and followers love you at the same time!
1. Only share things you’d use or buy anyway
Don’t take a sponsored gig if you don’t genuinely love the product or brand. You won’t be able to be authentic. Try instead to politely decline or ask about other products the company may have.

2. Use a conversational tone and words
Don’t start out with “I was thrilled when company xyz asked me to…” Your readers don’t want to hear that you’ve gotten a million things for “free”.
Even though you’re most certainly working for the product or compensation, unless your readers are bloggers they won’t understand that and you’ll come off as bragging.
3. Don’t sound like a valley girl, like, you know
Avoid sounding ridiculously excited. Especially if the product is something like a broom.
Keep your tone the same as how you’d actually talk about something in real life.
Use the words you’d normally use when describing the item or company. Try to broaden your vocabulary.
4. Keep to your niche
Don’t do sponsored posts that are outside of your niche.
Lifestyle bloggers have a bit of leeway here.
But don’t write about the newest nylons if you usually blog about power tools. It won’t resonate with your readers or followers and they’ll look at it as a grab for money – and really what else would it be?
5. Tell a story
Be creative and know how to tell a story. A story or project is the best way to engage your readers. Disclosure guidelines mean that you have to let people know your post is sponsored, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make your readers forget they’re reading sponsored content by weaving a good tale through your post.
Sometimes it’s easier to just spell out the features of a product when doing sponsored content. But it will be so much better in the long run – for you, the brand and for your readers – if you take the time to be authentic and creative when writing sponsored content.
