I know a lot of people get the urge to purge in the spring. And I get it. Winter is done and it can be so freeing to clean out the house. But I also get that urge in the fall, when it's time for back to school. Summer seems to wreak havoc on my house – kids in and out in dirty shoes, lots of physical growing and the resulting stash of too-small clothing. And then there's the fact that the Holidays and birthdays are coming, which means more stuff in the form of gifts. Which I'm thankful for, don't get me wrong.
It just seems a good time to clean out and simplify the house. Maybe you want to simplify your home too?
3 Reasons to Simplify Your Home
1. Less visual clutter. I like our house to be cozy. But I don't like it to be overrun with stuff. It's no fun tripping over things on the stairs just waiting to be put away. I dislike looking at 50 pairs of shoes in the entryway. I don't want to see now-too-small sweaters in a pile on the kids' bedroom floors. It's so soothing to look around and not have every corner stuffed with stuff. Let your house breathe.
2. Less to clean. Seriously who likes cleaning? (If you do, come to my house every other Friday and I'll ply you with coffee in exchange for cleaning services.) With less stuff in the house, there's less to clean, vacuum around and dust. And that alone makes it worth it to simplify your home!
3. Less time spent organizing. It's awesome to be organized. Organizing our space is one of my favorite things to do actually. But only with things that we actually need. Like spices in the pantry (our kitchen pantry shelving makeover is coming soon!), or towels in the closet. It's pretty pointless to organize stuff that's unnecessary.
So while you may not need that thingamabob or doohickey taking up space in the corner, someone else may. When you simplify, donate your unneeded items to local and national non-profits at Value Village. You never know who you might help!
