Spring Mantel

I’m so over winter!!!

Oh my goodness y’all, it’s still so freaking cold here! Honestly, I left a meeting Sunday night and when I got into my car nothing moved. The seat felt frozen stiff. Winter isn’t over yet in Southern Ontario.

BUT, that doesn’t mean I can’t make it feel like SPRING inside!

I like to start each season by decorating the mantel. It sort of acts as a springboard for the rest of the main floor’s seasonal décor.

SPRING mantel

This year’s spring mantel features our beloved stag head sporting a floral wreath. Even though I bought Oliver to go with our winter/Christmas mantel, he sort of grew on me and earned a place above the mantel beyond the Holidays.

I always crave a little color in the spring, and yet I kept the mantel fairly neutral with just the teeniest hint of pink, green and aqua. I’ve tried to add more color in the past, but I always find it to be too jarring and just not me. Sigh. Sorry about that all you color-lovers.

You’ll recognize many elements from past mantels – the birdcages, the small wooden trencher, the banners (the paper one we made and the burlap one is from here), old hymnals and of course Oliver himself. The large ceramic bird has been around for awhile too.

But I did add in a few new things. The flowers in the bird house were a Homesense find and I added the small printed nests to the paper pinwheel banner.

I’ll also show you how to make the super simple flower wreath later this week and the tutorial & template for the flying birds will be on Lil’ Luna on Saturday.

UPDATE: Simple Paper Flower Wreath tutorial is here and Flying Paper Birds tutorial is here.

Every time I decorate the mantel, I love it a little more than the last version. Isn’t that funny?

It’s so nice to meet you, Shannon. I love stags, garlands, birdhouses and birdnests and so your beautiful spring vignette makes me smile. Like you I prefer to decorate with neutrals and can deal with a few bits of color here and there from time to time.

Very pretty Shannon – I love the little wreath around the deer head. I am the opposite of you- I always add so much color and have been trying to tone it down a bit at times!!

Where did you get the nest print that you added to your paper banner that is hanging above the burlap Nest banner on Spring Mantle?
    Thanks, Pam Sanders

What a clever make do way to make a wreath. Smart gal. Love that wreath around your buddy.
I’ve made lots of paper flowers so might just use those til I can buy a bag like yours. Did you get yours at Michaels or Hobby Lobby or? We have Michaels, Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann’s luckily so I go where t he sales are and have coupons for. I”d get kinda upset when our paper on Sunday doesn’t have my Michaels sale paper. I subscribe to JoAnn’s to get those coupons.
Love Oliver. He’s pretty spiffy looking with the wreath and frame around him. Most of all I love your wire bird cages, where did you buy yours? I’ve gotten several of mine at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, love those places. I have couple of them on my shutter shelf (my version of a mantel) and the corner shelves in our living room. I have so much fun decorating those shelves. On my shutter shelf I have an old window with a delicate flower garland on the window edges.
Could I get you to part with the pattern for your paper birds, I’d love to make some to put on window panes and wall around the shelf. Pretty please? I’d so appreciate it. I’ve pinned this post and subscribed to your blog. Enjoying it very much already. Happy Spring days
