Hey all! Diana here from Our Vintage Home Love.
I was so honored to be asked by Shannon to do a guest post here on AKA Design!
I usually have a bit of trouble decorating for the holidays each year because I’m not a huge fan of bright red and green decorations. My decor tends to be on the neutral calm side and that’s how I like to keep holiday decorations.
My hubby came home with a trashed wooden crate the other day that had two perfectly good sides. So, I thought it would be fun to make a wooden sign out of it that could be used for our holiday decor. I love aged wooden signs and never seem to find any good ones so I just make my own.
Here’s how I did it.
First I took the two good pieces of wood and laid them on the ground to make sure they were straight and lined up well.
Then I flipped them over to attach the support beams on both sides.
For the support beams, I just used more pieces of the same crate. I just wanted to use what I had on hand. I attached the beams with screws from the back.
That’s it as far as building the sign. Next, I whitewashed the front a bit, making sure to leave wood exposed in areas.
I thought it would be fun to do a Christmas Tree Farm sign, perfect for the holidays. So hubby and I came up with Riverview Christmas Tree Farm. I simply used a word program on my computer, typed the title using Arial font sized to 300. I printed this out and placed it on the sign to make sure it fit.
After making certain that it was going to fit on the wooden sign, I cut the letters out and used the remaining paper as a template. Simple and free. And it doesn’t need to be perfect. The idea is for it to look aged.
I used a paint color called forest khaki from Glidden. To make the letters stand out a bit more, I outlined them in black paint.
After it dried completely, I took a piece of sandpaper to it and sanded off some of the white paint.
And that’s it!
Here’s how it looks in the room….to attach it to the wall, just use a picture hanging kit.
Total cost of this project, NOTHING!
Again, thank you Shannon & Dean! Have a great day!!
