Summer is giving one last kick at the can – at least in Southern Ontario. Temperatures have been up and it’s been humid again. We’ve even had the air conditioners on low 24/7 to keep the temperature pleasant in the house.
We’ve got one quick trip up north planned (aside from our trip to Quebec to see Dean’s sister this will actually be our first trip north this summer which is totally shameful) and I can’t wait to see the rocks and lakes I grew up near. And of course visit my sis and parents. #happysigh
Other than that, these last two weeks of summer (in Ontario kids don’t go back to school until after Labor Day) are filled with final soccer games and swimming lessons and getting ready for fall.
Speaking of which…
Getting ready for fall this year for us means really messing up the main floor and bedrooms because…Lumber Liquidators has partnered with us to cover up the ugly (parquet) throughout the house – yup, upstairs and the main floor will ALL be this gorgeous hand-scraped hickory laminate by Thanksgiving! Follow #projectlaminate on twitter and instagram for updates as we get working on this project.
We’re also going to try moving our homeschooling to the lower level family room this year. We’ve talked about doing this for a few reasons. The first is all those bookshelves (below). I really want to make better use of all the books and resources we have, but I don’t want to bring them up to the living room. #toomessy
And I love that we have a living space that is off the entry (the living room) and another one a few steps down (the family room) and I picture them having two totally different purposes: the upstairs being an entertaining/hosting space and the lower level as more of a family space. And with the flooring renos going on upstairs (the family room is staying carpet for awhile), school won’t be interrupted if we’re downstairs.
(Also my office/studio will be through that door in the picture above, which means it will be nice and close to the school area.)
I’ve also decided we need a little more structure and routine around here. Summer is one thing, but heading back into the rest of the year, the kids and I all need to know what needs to be accomplished and when. I have so many things I want to do (blogging, writing, teaching, design school, product development, tea with friends, projects, etc) and the kids have so many things they need to learn as well as general interests they want to pursue. If we aren’t diligent about it and have a realistic version of a schedule, none of the important things will happen and everything will become urgent. Know what I mean?
We’ve also go the front hallway makeover well under way. Surprise!
After a bit of a fiasco with the wrong type of mortar for the ceramic floor tiles (poor Dean had to scrape it all up and start over), the tiles are firmly in place and waiting for grout. We’ve also added my new favorite plank board wall & cast iron hooks, the closet doors are awaiting a new coat of white paint, we have new exterior door hardware and hinges courtesy of D. Lawless Hardware (gorgeous!) and some fun accessories like a Dash and Albert rug, some geometric pillows, two adorable aqua door pulls from Pier One for the closet doors.
And finally, I really should paint the family room while the bookshelves are all asunder from reorganizing anyway.
So, the next two to three weeks for me contains a LOT of organizing, purging, painting, notes, shuffling, and revising. How about you?
