Fall Vignette and Free Fall Printables

With kids back in school and leaves already falling while we were up in cottage country this weekend, fall is certainly on its way.

Around here fall comes with so much seasonal excitement – apple picking, bonfires, corn roasts, Thanksgiving and pumpkin spice lattes.

And fall decorating, of course!

I showed you our fall mantel on Friday and while I gushed about how much I love fall, I also told you how to style your own mantel.

Well, while I had all my fall decorating paraphernalia out (you may have seen it all over the dining room if you follow us on Instagram), I also decorated the buffet.

And I’m going to show you how to decorate your own buffet or table top too! (Scroll down for free printables too!)

Create your own balanced fall vignette

  1. Much like decorating a mantel or an other tabletop surface, start with a clean slate. Empty surfaces. Take it all off. :)
  2. Put one big something in the center – in my case the clock on the chalkboard wall holds this place.
  3. Then add in one thing on each side that are visually balanced and shorter than the center item. On the buffet I placed the two lamps. This creates a triangle with the clock and two lamps.
  4. Then fill in the rest of the space, starting with larger items (books, framed print, bowl of faux caramel apples) and then sprinkle in some small seasonal pieces for a full look (paper leaves cut from kraft paper on my Silhouette).

It really helps to step back now and then to see how the overall look is shaping up. Then you can make adjustments as you go instead of feeling really frustrated when you think you’ve finished.

See that cute little print in the fancy frame?

AKA Design fall 2014 vignette and printable

Yeah, that one.

You can download it here for free – in two colors/styles! (Thank you to a sweet reader who emailed and mentioned that I spelled lattes with three t’s instead of two. How embarrassing.  The printables have been corrected!)

And you can either print it and use it in an 8×10 frame or cut it out to fit a 5×7 frame!

Just click on the print you like below to get to the PDF, then right click to save and print.

If you’re not a natural born decorator, it’s easy for a space to look crowded instead of filled out and tacky instead of cozy.

That’s why my friend Kristen rounded up a bunch of talented bloggers. Everyone of us is showing just ONE little space in each of their own homes decorated for autumn – including a FREE printable – so you can replicate the look in your own house!

It looks amazing and cozy and hopefully those apples will be gone by the time I come visit (unlike the coffee cake…lol) you have such a unique style and I love that about your home…xo

Hi Shannon! Love your buffet. That whole area works so well together…it’s just gorgeous.
Goofy question…I would love to know where you got those lamps. I’m hoping you’re not going to tell me it’s some special store in Canada… :) I’ve been looking for a specific lamp (one that I wouldn’t know until I saw it, you know?) and this is it!

Oh boy! A friend gave it to us – it was a brassy brown color and I just dry brushed some paint over it. Grey Tweed like the hutch on the other side of the room.

WOW! Can I just say that you amaze me!? I am such a terrible decorator… I wish you could come to my house and set me right, and I LOVE the dirty chalk wall!! I am wondering how good it would look like on textured walls – what do you think?? Amazing! You are amazing!!!

Thank you so much. You probably could do it depending on how much texture there is on your wall. Just be sure to follow the directions on the chalkboard paint – especially the curing time and covering the whole thing with chalk before you write anything!
