DIY Project: Scrapbook Paper Fall Banner

As I mentioned, the scrapbook paper banner we created for our mantle was made super rush  – and super late at night.

It was a fairly easy project, once I figured out how I wanted it to look. I’m sure you could make one really pretty for fall or even with some other colours of paper for winter or just about any season. It was also a very inexpensive banner coming in at less than $10 total!

What you’ll need:
assorted coordinating scrapbook paper
brown paper lunch bags
clothes pins
jute
glue stick
glue gun
scissors

Step 1. Cut out your actual pennants. Ours were about 5 inches by 7 inches. Then I cut a triangle shape out of the bottom of each pennant, by marking a spot in the centre about an inch or two from the bottom. Then I just drew a line from each bottom corner to the mark and cut.

Step 2. Make the centre rectangles. I just measured 2 inch strips of paper for the larger rectangle, and about 1.5 inches for the smaller rectangle. Glue stick them onto your pennant and then cut out the triangle bottom using the other cutout as a guide.

Step 3. I made all of my simple circles next. I just traced around various objects to get the different sizes. I used some old scrapbook scissors I had kicking around to give the largest circle a shapely edge, but this isn’t necessary.

Step 4. The brown paper bag accordian circle was a little trickier. Essentially I used the front of a paper bag, cut in half length-wise and taped together to make a longer piece. I folded it back and forth back and forth like an accordian fan. And then I bent it around to make a circle. This was the tricky part – it kept wanting to pop up in the middle until I glued the circles on. Then I stacked all the circles together and glued them. {NOTE: to glue the accordian flower to the others you need a hot glue gun}

Step 5. To make the letters, I freehanded the word FALL onto white paper (you could use a stencil), cut out each letter, flipped it over and traced it onto the BACK of my {glitter} paper. Then I cut those out and glued them to the top-most circle.

Step 6. I decided that I wanted my banner to look a bit aged. Since I’d cheaped out and not bought the Distressin’ Ink I really wanted I thought I’d see what some Dark Minwax Finishing Paste Wax would do (yes, I do know it’s for wood!). Much to my surprise it worked beautifully!

The last and final step is to clip each pennant onto the jute with a clothespin and voila! A finished banner!

What do you think? What are the possibilities with all the scrapbook papers out there?

  3. just love your tutorials and great work. I hope you win the big competition. I voted for the best. The explanation sounded like you chatting away…!

  4. another thought. I might try using fabric instead of scrap paper as I work with fabric. I would still do the paper penant and lunch bag circle fan. I also have really old clothespins that I got from a garage sale…look like they have been in the rain many times. Very rustic.

  5. Ooo My Gosh!! This is AMAZING!! Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I’m pinning it right now!
