Last fall we shared our crazy simple DIY fall burlap banner. Let me just say for the record (again!) that I am a big fan of burlap. Like LOVE it. Only not for pillows or chairs or anything I have to touch often. I prefer cozy for that. But I love how burlap looks. Anyway (focus woman!), since it’s obviously not fall in the northern hemisphere anymore I needed a new something to put up on the hutch. Oh burlap….Ta-da!
I love the texture, the pale aqua colour and the super subtle white letters with a wee bit of glitter. Can you see it?
Sweet burlap aqua love!
Here’s what you’d need to make your own:
-
about 1/4 to 1/2 metre of burlap
-
jute or hemp string in desired length
-
Martha Stewart by Plaid Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Sea Lavendar
-
Martha Stewart by Plaid Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint in Summer Linen
- Martha Stewart Crafts Coarse Glitter in Crystal
-
Martha Stewart by Plaid stencil brushes, 1 large & 1 small
-
Martha Stewart by Plaid Monogram Serif Alphabet stencil
- napkins or a paper plate
Step 1.
Measure out and cut four pennant pieces. Ours were about 4″ x 8″ rectangles, with triangles cut out of one short side.
Step 2.
Using the zigzag setting on your sewing machine and folding the burlap over the string about a half an inch, sew each pennant to the string, spacing evenly. (Not shown).
Step 3.
Place the banner on some newspaper or something that can get paint on it (because the paint will bleed through the burlap). Pour some Sea Lavendar paint onto napkins or a paper plate. Dab the large stencil brush in the paint and then onto each pennant piece. Repeat for desired coverage. Let dry – or help along with a blow dryer.
Step 4.
Place stencil letter centered on pennant. Using small stencil brush and Summer Linen paint, dab through letter stencil onto burlap.
Step 5.
Immediately, while Summer Linen paint is still wet & stencil is still in place, sprinkle Coarse Glitter over stencil just so the letter gets all glammed up with glitter. Let dry.
Repeat Step 4 & 5 for a total of 2 X’s and 2 O’s.
It’s totally hard to see in pictures, but do you like the subtle hit of aqua? How about the wee bit of glitter?

So fun!!! I couldn’t wait to share!!!
We are of like minds! I have been painting burlap like crazy for the past couple of weeks. I have been using burlap in every project that I am doing. Just last night, as I was working on a burlap banner of my own (remarkably similar to yours!) my youngest daughter asked me, “Mom, do you think you could make a whole house out of burlap?” Given enough burlap and hot glue, I just might! Beautiful blog!
Melissa – that is so funny – a house of burlap!
Fun and looks simple enough–I need to do some fabric projects for an upcoming show–this would be perfect.
