I actually started this project in, um, August! And it’s been sitting in my living room for ages, all cozy and pretty in my big black chair.
Truthfully I have a list a mile long of projects to start and finish before someone comes to take pics of the house for apartment therapy on the 10th. But I just don’t have the energy today.
Fortunately this purty little pillow somehow missed being posted about!
***I have included the instruction here again for making the folded rose for this pillow, in case you missed my post about it earlier on this year.
What you’ll need:
-
canvas drop cloth piece (24″ x 24″)
-
polyfill
-
linen piece of fabric (6″ x 48″)
-
some sort of jewel for centre of folded rose
-
paper bird template (paper, pencil, scissors)
-
glitter fabric paint
-
short straight bristled craft paint brush
-
needle and thread
-
pins
-
iron (optional)
Step 1.
To create your pillow simply fold drop cloth piece in half lengthwise with right side in and machine-stitch all the way around. Leave an opening and turn right side out.
Step 2.
Either find, freehand draw or copy my bird template (sorry I drew it on paper) and then cut it out and trace it onto your pillow in your desired position with a pencil.
Step 3.
Using a short straight bristled craft paint brush and glitter fabric paint, paint inside your pencil lines carefully. Depending on the colour you choose, you may have to do several coats. Let dry thoroughly before moving onto the remaining steps. (I did three coats and you can still barely see my bird. But I kind of like it that way!)
Step 4.
Stuff pillow with polyfill and neatly hand stitch shut. (If you want to get fancy and add a zipper or an envelope closure, I am not the person to ask about it! Lol. There are plenty of tutorials out there – just try a google search. ) Set aside.
Step 5.
To create the linen folded rose, fold the each side of your linen material into the middle along the length of the fabric. It totally helps to iron it.

Step 6.
Now fold over the end of your fabric at about 45 degrees. Continue folding the length of your fabric at the same angle, pinning as you go.

Step 7.
Using a needle and {long} thread begin sewing along the first fold and then continue sewing across the TOP length of folded fabric. Pull gently as you go. Sew to the end, but DO NOT cut the thread.

Step 8.
With the needle and thread still attached, pull your thread gently to ‘ruffle’ the fabric. Start to wind into a flower shape, tucking the ends toward the back of the flower. Sew layers together, hiding the thread in the fabric on the front.

Step 9.
If you’ve run out of thread, start a new length to attach your embellishment/button. Sew it on and tie off a the back of your flower. Using a needle and some more thread attach folded rose to your pillow.
And that is about it! You should have a really pretty but slightly rustic looking pillow!
