DIY Project: UN-Stencilled Un-Barnboard

I’m pretty sure you guys are going to get sick of me showing you this method of creating letters and images, but it’s just SO easy and SO versatile!

When I wanted to change up the mantle for our TV thing (I know, I’m sorry, I can’t tell you until Monday!) because it needed to be non-seasonal, I had some space to fill. So, among a few other projects that I’ll share later, I made this quickie little sign that looks like it’s stencilled on old barn board.

I had everything I needed on hand – go figure! – a scrap of wood (this was another leftover piece from our headboard project and was about 36 inches by 5.5 inches), some Minwax Dark Walnut Stain, DecoArt Antique White paint, pencil, paper, paintbrush, foam brush and some sandpaper.

Step 1.
Using a foam brush, I stained the wood with the Dark Walnut Stain. Let dry thoroughly.

Step 2.
Since I don’t have stencils as large as the wood I was using, I simply used my computer to type the numbers I wanted and traced them right off the computer screen onto paper (I used two sheets of 8.5 x 11 taped together).

Step 3.
Then I rubbed pencil all over the back of the paper, flipped it over, positioned it on the wood and then traced over the numbers again. This of course caused the pencil on the back of the paper to imprint onto the wood.

Step 4.
I removed the paper and just painted inside the lines with DecoArt’s Antique White and a Martha Stewart brush.

Step 5.
After the paint was dry I gave the whole thing a light sanding.

SO easy, no?!

And, if you’ve been around for a bit, you may have notice our header and some colours have changed. We’re just updating and doing some prettying up. Please be patient as we give AKA a face-lift!
