When we originally designed our new kitchen, it was to have these really great spice drawers beside the stove. Similar to the little square drawers in this photo, but only one drawer wide (instead of three).
Each drawer would pull out to reveal a shelf of spices.

Very convenient for organizing and ultimately for cooking. However, as with most renos, nothing went quite as planned. Due to the necessary placement of the hot water heater and the clearance it required for ventilation and safety, we had to move the stove over about six inches. Bye-bye spice drawers.
So, I got busy creating a new storage solution for our spices. I wanted to use these magnetic spice jars from www.canadiantire.ca:

To make something like this (also from Canadian Tire and other similar retailers):
However, since I have more than six spices and these babies cost $19.99 each set, I decided to find a cheaper alternative. Enter the ever-reliable Ikea and one of my fav stores Kitchen Stuff Plus!
We already had a few sets of these awesome little magnet bars (I believe they cost about $1.99 per set from ikea) on hand for our kids artwork.
Then I found these great little labels at Kitchen Stuff Plus. They had the most comprehensive list of spices of any set that I looked at.
Combine the Ikea treasures with the Canadian Tire jars and the Kitchen Stuff Plus Labels and I had the perfect solution for our spice storage. My cost $44.49 vs the store bought version of $62.49 (plus taxes).
What do you think? How do you store your spices?
